On Saturday, Radio Holguín, the provincial station, revealed that due to ongoing technical difficulties with their 97.7 FM and 1110 AM frequencies, they will broadcast via telephone. This move aims to keep the public informed about the widespread power outage and the approaching Hurricane Oscar. The station clarified on Facebook that this alternative method has been adopted to ensure their programming remains uninterrupted.
Listeners will now have access to the station’s special broadcast, airing from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, by dialing 18899 from a landline phone. This adaptation comes as a response to the energy crisis in Cuba, where power restoration has been gradually taking place. The situation in the eastern part of the island is particularly precarious with the looming threat of the hurricane.
The Electric Company of Holguín stated on Sunday that efforts have successfully linked circuits delivering electricity from Matanzas province to Holguín. "We've managed to establish an interconnected system from Matanzas to Holguín, primarily supported by CTE Guiteras, Energás Varadero, unit 5 of Nuevitas, and distributed generation," the state-run company announced on social media.
According to their report, the Cuban Electrical Union (UNE) is now focused on energizing the western region's grid. This involves initiating from Energás Boca de Jaruco to extend power to the floating plants in Havana and the Mariel thermoelectric plant.
