The recent extensive power outage that plunged Cuba into darkness for over 24 hours has led to a surge in coal sales through social media platforms. In a nation heavily reliant on electricity for daily food preparation, this blackout has pushed many to seek out coal as an urgent alternative.
Reports from citizens on social media and independent news outlets highlight that the energy shortfall has driven Cubans to turn to coal to sustain basic daily activities. On Facebook, numerous advertisements from desperate individuals seeking coal are circulating widely. Journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada has reported long lines in Santiago de Cuba as people scramble to secure this vital resource amid the ongoing power crisis.
Government Attempts to Mitigate Crisis
In response, the Cuban regime began offering coal for sale in certain areas known for potential protests. However, with a limited supply of liquefied gas, the price of coal has skyrocketed, causing heightened tension between supply and demand.
In regions like Las Tunas and Camagüey, coal stoves are being sold for as much as 3,000 Cuban pesos. Meanwhile, Cuban authorities announced on Saturday that only 11 percent of the national electricity grid has been restored, underscoring the severity of the situation.
