A resident from Puerto Padre, located in the province of Las Tunas, has taken to Facebook to express his outrage towards Cuba's public healthcare system. He specifically targets the Guillermo Domínguez General Teaching Hospital in Puerto Padre, Las Tunas, following the death of his 74-year-old mother, which he attributes to alleged medical negligence.
According to his account, his mother was admitted to the hospital on August 24, 2024, suffering from a "pyloric syndrome." She initially received basic medication, yet crucial examinations like an endoscopy were not performed. The hospital lacked a proper facility to house the equipment, although reportedly, it was available for those who could pay in dollars.
After spending 11 days in the hospital without any improvement, she was discharged with the assurance that she would be notified once the equipment was ready. However, after 19 days at home, unable to eat and in a critical condition, she was readmitted to the ICU on September 24, where an endoscopy was finally conducted.
Despite pleas for urgent surgical intervention, the necessary surgical procedure, a jejunostomy, was delayed until October 5. By then, the patient had endured 60 days without adequate nutrition, resulting in a weight loss of more than 70 pounds. Tragically, following the operation, she suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on October 10 at 1:50 a.m.
The grieving son accuses the hospital of negligence and a lack of timely care, which he believes endangered his mother's life and ultimately led to her untimely death.
