The renowned Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela is gearing up to release a new track, promising another hit from an artist known for his outspoken critique of the oppressive regime. Following his 2021 release "La feria de los tontos," which highlighted the regime's downfall, Varela is back with a new song titled "Elefantes."
Through snippets shared on his social media, Varela gives a glimpse into this upcoming release, hinting at another bold commentary on Cuba's political landscape. "Working on the song 'Elefantes' from my new album," he posted on Facebook, sharing a reel where he's seen collaborating with a sound technician.
In a brief 30-second clip, listeners are given a taste of a song that appears to critique the Cuban government and its effects over the past six decades. Varela's voice resonates with the phrase, "Esto no hay quien lo aguante," encapsulating the song's critical tone. These few words suggest that "Elefantes" will spark conversation upon its release.
Previous Success with "La feria de los tontos"
Back in August 2021, Varela employed a similar promotional tactic to introduce "La feria de los tontos," sharing teasers on his profiles. "I've spent over a year composing 'La Feria de los Tontos,' and now it feels like it's coming to life," he shared, alongside a recording made with Sweet Lizzy Project at the House of Blues Studios in Nashville, Tennessee.
Released in December of the same year, during a period marked by Cuba's historic July 11 protests, the song quickly became a hit and an anthem for those opposing the dictatorship. The music video, shot in black and white, features Varela inside an old television set, singing lines that criticize the oppressive state: "Come, come to the House of Games where fear is distributed, and everyone wears a blindfold and carries a blind man's cane. Come dance with the clowns, the step of failure, giving a smile and selling hugs."
As anticipation builds for "Elefantes," fans of Carlos Varela are eager to see how he will continue to challenge the status quo through his music.
