In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, which left millions without power and thousands of people affected in Florida, a group of Cubans in Tampa have launched generous initiatives, providing free meals to those in desperate need. Tampa, one of the hardest-hit areas, witnessed incredible acts of community spirit.
Yandry Roque Pando, the young proprietor of Ena’s Secret Bake located at 3412 Armenia Ave, Tampa, took to Facebook to invite those in need to share in the free food offerings. "We have stew. If you don't have a way to prepare food for the kids, or anything else, come here and we'll give you food. We have pizza, we're making stews, chicken, everything, so come right now, my people. Everything is free, I don't want money, I just want you to come," he stated passionately.
Community Support and Generosity
Another Cuban, known as Chef Ramoncito, also joined the relief efforts, announcing on Facebook that he would set up nine large paella pans in front of the Bravo supermarket on Armenia Ave. “The last three can feed 300 to 400 people,” he shared.
The video shared on social media revealed that over 15,000 people were fed thanks to the collaboration of numerous individuals and the support of the local religious community. “I want to thank all the religious groups worldwide, not just for their support, but for the heart they have shown,” expressed one of the organizers, visibly moved by the overwhelming solidarity.
A Unified Effort
The event was praised for its collective effort to ensure everything ran smoothly. The police and volunteers were instrumental in keeping the area clean and orderly. “It's been incredible, with everyone giving hugs, expressing gratitude... we've seen people who traveled up to two hours to receive help,” noted Chef Ramoncito, highlighting the profound appreciation of those who benefited from this heartfelt gesture.
Meanwhile, Andy Vázquez called for assistance for a Cuban family living in Cape Coral whose home was destroyed by fire on Wednesday due to Hurricane Milton, after a transformer fell on their house. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident at 107 Chiquita Boulevard, as most family members had evacuated to Miami.
