Amidst the daily struggles on Cuba's roads, where transportation is a relentless challenge, certain individuals stand out for their simplicity and dedication, earning praise on social media for their exemplary conduct. One such individual is Mayito, a bus driver from Camagüey, celebrated for his generosity and dedication to his passengers. His commendable actions were highlighted by the Querido Lec Tor profile in the Facebook group “Revolico Guáimaro.”

The post's author noted, “Mayito is a man who doesn't turn a blind eye when bus stops are crowded or even sparsely populated.” She praised his empathy, saying, “He is moved by those of us who need transportation; his route adapts, and he offers significant help wherever he goes.” Furthermore, she highlighted his friendly demeanor: “Rarely have I seen him upset or dismissive of his passengers' needs and requests,” which has earned him widespread appreciation, according to the post.

The comments section was filled with hundreds of people acknowledging the virtues of this driver, who is well-known among those who take his bus. Miguel Pérez Francisco commented, “Greetings to my friend Mayito, one of the few left with such a great human conscience.” Meanwhile, Odalys Morera Torres remarked, “He truly deserves recognition because he’s among the few who show empathy for us pedestrians.”

Eddy Abreu Victoria, who seemingly knows him well, emphasized his dedication: “Perhaps unknown to many, he is the most senior at the station and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he was always on the front line, transporting the sick at any hour.” Mercedes Cantillo shared, “Only those who have lived with drivers understand the hardships they endure and the expenses they cover to keep working, a hug and good health to you, my friend.”

Despite the deep crisis facing Cubans, where it’s easy to succumb to selfish and opportunistic behaviors to take advantage of others' misfortunes, or to be in a foul mood at work due to power outages or a lack of liquefied gas, some individuals rise above these hardships and offer their best selves.

In an unrelated act of goodwill, a young woman from Santiago, Dayma Fajardo, garnered admiration on social media after announcing she found a cellphone in a hospital and was seeking its owner. “This morning (Monday) I found this Samsung A32 at the children's hospital La Colonia,” she posted in the Facebook group “AMAZON Santiago de Cuba.com,” stating she would return the phone only to its rightful owner.

In another incident, a young Cuban discovered a professor's lost cellphone and promptly contacted her to return it. This event took place in Ciego de Ávila and was recounted on Facebook by Wilfredo Osuna Rodríguez, the director of the educational center where the fortunate teacher works.
