Initially forming as a tropical storm, Hurricane Milton has swiftly intensified to become one of the strongest cyclones of the 2024 hurricane season. Spectacular images from the International Space Station reveal the storm's massive power as it reaches Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. With sustained winds reaching up to 155 mph, Milton is considered one of the most hazardous hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, posing an imminent threat to both Florida and Cuba.

Threats to Florida

Despite being downgraded to a Category 4 storm on Tuesday, October 8, Milton remains a formidable danger to Florida’s coastlines. U.S. meteorological authorities have issued warnings about strong winds, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding as Milton advances toward Florida's western shores. Preparations are underway for what might become one of the largest evacuations in recent years. In Miami, intense rain has already battered the region, causing flooding in parts of Hialeah. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has urged residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate immediately, with the storm expected to make landfall on Wednesday night, potentially bringing storm surges of up to 20 feet.

Impact on Cuba

Meanwhile, in Cuba, the effects of Milton are already being felt, especially in the Surgidero de Batabanó, where initial coastal flooding has wreaked havoc. The Institute of Meteorology on the island has warned of perilous conditions in the western regions, including Pinar del Río and Isla de la Juventud. Strong swells are anticipated along the western coast, with alerts in place across the region. Authorities have advised residents to stay vigilant and adhere to safety instructions to mitigate risks.

2024 Hurricane Season Overview

The 2024 hurricane season has been one of the most active in recent memory, impacting both Cuba and Florida with multiple cyclones. In late September, Hurricane Helene inflicted significant damage on Havana's Malecón, with strong swells and flooding damaging several structures. Helene's rains and winds also caused severe flooding in Surgidero de Batabanó in Mayabeque province, an area now also threatened by Milton. Florida residents are still grappling with the aftermath of Helene, which left numerous casualties and severe flooding along the coast before Milton's approach.
