The U.S. Embassy in Cuba issued a warning this Monday regarding an upcoming public demonstration organized by the island's government in support of the Palestinian cause. Scheduled for the afternoon of October 8th, the event will take place in Havana.
This demonstration is set to begin near the island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will proceed along the Malecón, culminating at the Anti-Imperialist Platform, which is situated directly across from the U.S. diplomatic mission.
Safety Precautions Advised for U.S. Citizens
In an announcement shared on its Instagram page, the embassy advised all American citizens to steer clear of the demonstration area, as even seemingly peaceful protests can turn unpredictable without warning. The advisory also highlighted the possibility of traffic detours, increased police presence, and disruptions to transportation services.
The embassy urged individuals to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings at all times, and stay updated through media outlets regarding potential changes to the situation on the ground.
Historical Context of Similar Demonstrations
A similar advisory was issued in November 2023, when the Cuban regime held a large-scale demonstration in support of Palestine, which also passed by the U.S. Embassy. During that event, students from the Arab nation studying in Cuba participated, with some carrying images of Hamas militia leaders.
Travel Advisory and Security Concerns
According to Diario de Cuba, the U.S. Department of State has maintained a travel advisory for its citizens visiting Cuba since November 2022. This advisory cautions travelers to take necessary precautions due to the threat of petty crime against tourists. Moreover, violent crimes, including armed robbery, homicide, and sexual assault, occasionally occur in Cuba, as highlighted by the media.
