Lenier Mesa, a prominent figure in the music industry, has often found himself at the center of controversy due to his stance on Cuba. The criticism intensified following his trip last year with Tekashi 6ix9ine. However, Mesa has consistently defended himself, asserting that he has no ties with the government and that his visit was strictly for professional reasons.
During an interview on the podcast "Destino Tolk," the Cuban singer made it clear that if his work necessitates another trip to Cuba, he would comply because his livelihood depends on his music. "I can't go to Cuba to perform for $5,000 or $10,000 because I don't earn that in a show here, nor can I live on that. Thankfully, my music is listened to worldwide, and my royalties are global. I make good money. It was an opportunity with 6ix9ine; I went and earned money in Cuba," Mesa explained. During the interview, he revealed that he earned $100,000 for that trip to Cuba as part of a larger tour with Tekashi.
Commitment to Work Despite Controversy
"If tomorrow I'm offered $200,000, I will go to Cuba to do whatever I need to do, without any involvement with the government," Lenier firmly stated. He emphasized that Cuban artists are among the most eager to see the dictatorship on the island fall and to witness change: "We don't get any digital earnings, we don't get paid from YouTube, we don't get paid from Spotify. We're struggling immensely here. Cuban artists are starving here. What do I care about the Cuban government? What we need is for that to change so we can live like Marc Anthony, Daddy Yankee, who do shows and live off their royalties."
Facing Backlash and Staying Resilient
Although he admitted feeling hurt when several artists turned their backs on him and the controversy impacted his family, Mesa acknowledges that he is not easily swayed by influencers or social media buzz. He remains focused on his career and supporting his family through his music, despite the challenges and criticisms he faces.
