A newly released video by Miami-Dade authorities captures the precise moment of a tragic accident that occurred on April 23 in Hialeah, where a speeding teenager driving an SUV collided with a car, resulting in the deaths of three Cuban women.
The footage from a security camera shows a white vehicle speeding down the street just before 8 PM. Within less than 15 seconds, the vehicle returns in the opposite direction at a staggering 83 miles per hour, violently crashing into the driver's side of the car carrying the victims: three women aged 39, 43, and 66.
The women had stopped at a stop sign and were just starting to move forward when they were struck by the SUV. Eddie Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Hialeah Police Department, confirmed that the driver, 15-year-old Maykoll Santiesteban, was traveling at over 80 miles per hour just two seconds before the crash.
The teenager was accompanied by three other adolescents of the same age and had taken his parents' vehicle without permission. The parents are residents of the Hialeah neighborhood where the crash occurred. Family members of the victims expressed their grief and frustration to Telemundo 51, with Smeider Rodríguez stating that the young driver "killed them out of irresponsibility."
On the day of the accident, 36-year-old Yarina and her aunt Gloria were killed instantly. Yarina's 66-year-old mother had been hospitalized in a rehabilitation clinic since the accident but succumbed to her severe injuries this week.
Bob García, who lost his daughter Yarina and sister-in-law Gloria in the crash, said he also lost his wife of 43 years. "This has been the greatest trial of my life," he said, visibly shaken.
Young Santiesteban will be tried as an adult, with the prosecution arguing that due to the severity of the offenses, he should not be released under any circumstances until sentencing is passed.
