The Cuban government has reported a fire at a Turkish floating power plant in Havana Bay that left eight workers injured. The incident occurred on Thursday morning during welding operations on the KPS 57 barge, which contributes 15 MW to the National Electric System (SEN).
Félix Estrada Rodríguez, the general director of national dispatch for the Electric Union (UNE), provided few details but mentioned that the fire was swiftly contained. "The unit is available with its four engines; it did not suffer any damage that would prevent it from generating power for the system," he told the television.
Estrada did not provide any updates on the condition of the injured workers. Among them, one Turkish citizen is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. He only mentioned that all the injured are hospitalized.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, stated on his Twitter account that the barge where the fire occurred did not suffer structural damage. "The generation capacity of our electric system in Cuba was not affected by this accident," he added.
