The mother of a doctor who was murdered in Havana last year is dissatisfied with the punishment given to her son's killer. Pablo Corrales Susi, a physician at the Cristóbal Labra Polyclinic in La Lisa, was reported missing in May 2023. Days later, his body was discovered; he had been murdered for his motorcycle, a Suzuki he used to earn extra cash.
A year after the tragedy, his grieving mother is demanding that the perpetrator remain behind bars for life. "All murderers should receive life sentences, even if they are minors. No more leniency, no parole. We need a firm hand like Bukele's," declared Rebeca Susi Sarfati in a Facebook group called "Denouncing Crimes in Cuba."
A Call for Stricter Penalties
In another post, Rebeca detailed that her son's murderer was apprehended a week after the body was found. "The trial has concluded, and he was only sentenced to 22 years because he was considered a minor," she lamented, clarifying that the criminal was actually 20 years old. "He's in a juvenile facility for rehabilitation. Meanwhile, my son is in the cemetery and will never come out. This is an injustice. He was my only child, and now I'm alone while they protect murderers," she concluded.
The Details of the Crime
Pablo Corrales, 53, became another victim of the rising crime wave in Cuba in recent years. Known as an incredible and kind person, he went out to refuel his motorcycle on May 29, 2023, and was never seen alive again. He frequently offered rides in the Plaza of Marianao, and on that day, his killer tricked him into driving from the Piquera de 126 to another location. On the return trip, he was stabbed to death for his motorcycle and other belongings.
Four days later, his body, bearing multiple stab wounds, was found between the José Antonio Echeverría Technological University of Havana (Cujae) and Boyeros Avenue.
