Cubans Come Together to Provide New Home for Girl Suffering from Hydrocephalus

Thursday, September 26, 2024 by Zoe Salinas

Ester Lianet Asprón Rey, a two-year-old girl battling hydrocephalus in Cuba, now has a new home in Las Tunas, thanks to the generosity of fellow Cubans who came together to ensure she and her family could own a house.

Nelson Álvarez, known on social media as "El Porfiao," shared the heartwarming news. He noted that while securing the house was a significant milestone, their next goal is to furnish it, as the family had been renting and owned very little.

"We have achieved the first step of getting her a house. Now, we aim for more to give this little girl a dignified life. I can buy some things myself, but I need your support through her GoFundMe," Álvarez wrote.

Accompanying his post was a video of Ester's father expressing his gratitude, stating, "The dream of having our own home for my daughters has finally come true."

Community Support Makes a Difference

Ester's situation gained public attention in late August when it was revealed that she urgently needed a self-regulating ventricular valve to survive, a device unavailable at the Pediatric Hospital in Las Tunas where she was being treated.

This plea for help rallied the Cuban community, both on the island and abroad, resulting in donations of money, medications, and eventually, the much-needed valve.

Hope on the Horizon

Recent updates on Ester's health indicate that her fever is subsiding and her potassium and protein levels have significantly decreased. With this improvement, there is hope that she may soon undergo surgery and return home to her new house with her family.

The collective effort of Cubans has not only provided a new home for Ester but also demonstrated the power of community solidarity in times of need.
