Amid speculations about his possible death, Raúl Castro was notably absent from the recent visit of Vietnamese President To Lam to Cuba. This absence is unusual given Castro's significant role in Cuban diplomacy and his history of welcoming high-ranking officials from Vietnam.
Two years ago, To Lam, who was not yet the president then, was received by Castro during a visit to the island. This time, upon arriving at José Martí International Airport, To Lam was greeted by Dr. Roberto Morales Ojeda, a member of the political bureau. He later met with his Cuban counterpart Miguel Díaz-Canel and Díaz-Canel's wife, Lis Cuesta.
What's particularly striking is the lack of any announced meeting between Castro and To Lam, fueling the rumors about Castro's serious health issues or possible death that have been circulating since last week. Although there has been no official confirmation and reports dismissing the rumors as false have emerged, the topic has gone viral on social media.
Historical Diplomatic Engagements
Castro is known for his routine engagement with important political figures, such as the president of Belarus earlier this year, and various UN officials visiting Cuba. The last time To Lam visited the island, Castro, as the historical leader of the country, personally greeted him. Both leaders, being army generals, share a strong bond due to their prominent roles in their respective nations, which have historically enjoyed robust diplomatic relations.
