More than 75,000 families in Pinar del Río remain without electricity this Thursday following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. According to journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso, a total of 75,544 customers in all municipalities of the province are currently without power.
"Most of the circuits in the city have been knocked out by the persistent strong winds," Alonso shared on his Facebook wall.
Yamile Ramos Cordero, the first secretary of the Party in the region, announced that crews from Havana, Mayabeque, and Cienfuegos will arrive in the coming hours to assist in the recovery efforts. "The early hours of today were more challenging than the previous night. The province recorded gusts of up to 90 km/h. It rains intermittently but with intensity in several communities," she stated.
Significant Damage in Agriculture and Power Sector
Ramos Cordero mentioned that the main damages are concentrated in agriculture and the electrical sector. She did not comment on any structural damages to homes, which often suffer the most during natural disasters due to their severe deterioration.
Regarding the power service, it was reported that the line supplying the Sandino municipality is experiencing issues, which also affects water supply in the area. Efforts are being made to restore service in Guane, although the town of Cortés is unlikely to receive power in the short term. Localities like Minas, Santa Lucía, and Pons have already regained electricity, but there are still outages in other areas, including Guanito and San Diego. Of the 438 interruptions in the province, 144 are in the main municipality.
