Content creator Valentina (@valentinabuof) took to TikTok to share her thoughts on what she wishes she had known before moving to the United States. In two videos, she offers advice specifically aimed at newcomers, warning that the "American Dream" is often not what it seems. According to Valentina, many arrive with high expectations, only to face a starkly different reality, especially financially.

"You come in very naive and idealize a lot of things because you don't know until you live it," she explained. She highlighted that the first year is typically the hardest for most immigrants. Without a solid plan, job, or stability, "it's probably the most difficult and labor-intensive year."

Different States, Different Worlds

Valentina also noted the significant differences between U.S. states, pointing out that each state has its own unique set of laws, wages, and living costs. She specifically advised against starting in Miami due to its high cost of living, especially for those who arrive without a clear plan. "It would have been good to arrive with the right mindset, but you come in very naive," she added.

Healthcare Challenges

Another crucial point she raised was the criticism of the American healthcare system, describing it as expensive and only accessible to the privileged. While she acknowledged the importance of having health insurance, she stressed that a serious hospital visit could be unaffordable for many. "It's a very costly fee for someone to go to the hospital and be admitted for a day," she said.

Mixed Reactions from Followers

Her videos elicited a variety of responses from her followers. Comments included: "The problem is people think everything will be handed to them and all they have to do is show up and work hard"; "I really wish I had seen this video before I arrived"; "And they exploit you because you don't have documents"; "In Colombia, healthcare is worse; you wait from 6 am to 5 pm for priority care." These comments reflect the wide range of opinions her reflections have sparked.
