A two-year-old Cuban girl passed away on Tuesday morning in Santiago de Cuba after spending several days in critical condition due to ingesting a veterinary antiparasitic medication.
The child, a resident of La Martinica in the San Luis municipality, had consumed a medication called Labiomec, given to her by her maternal grandmother, according to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.
A study published in the Cuban Journal of Animal Health indicates that Labiomec is a commonly used veterinary antiparasitic medication for controlling both internal and external parasites in various animal species such as cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs, and cats.
A Heartbreaking Medical Struggle
"We did everything we could, but she had multiple organ failures," said a specialist regarding the child's death. The girl had been hospitalized at the North Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba.
Due to the severity of her condition, the girl could not be transferred to the Colonia hospital, another facility within the Santiago de Cuba health system. "We treated her here, but her condition worsened each day," stated the doctor, whose name was not disclosed by Mayeta Labrada.
Community in Mourning
The toddler is currently being mourned at the local funeral home in San Luis.
