Alfonso Urquiola's personal car is facing severe technical problems, with some people saying that the "Lada has had it" after 25 years of use. Despite this, no support has come from INDER for this prominent figure in Cuban baseball.
The legendary former baseball manager and player is in a difficult situation due to the deterioration of his vehicle, which is currently under repair, as reported by sports journalist Ernesto Amaya Esquivel on Facebook. Amaya highlighted that, in recent times, INDER has provided new vehicles to many sports legends in Cuba, as well as to active athletes and others involved in sports. However, Urquiola, despite his extensive merits in the national sport, has been overlooked in these lists.
A Legacy in Cuban Baseball
Urquiola was a crucial member of the historic Vegueros de Pinar del Río teams during the 70s, 80s, and 90s. As a player, he represented Cuba in various international competitions, including World Championships, Intercontinental Cups, Pan American Games, and Central American Games.
Achievements as a Manager
Later, as a manager, he led the Pinar del Río team to victory in three national series (97-98, 2010-11, and 2013-14). He also managed the Cuban National Baseball Team, achieving significant victories, such as:
- Gold at the World Championship in Italy (1998)
- Gold at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg (1999)
- Victory at the Caribbean Series in San Juan, Puerto Rico (2015)
- Leading the Cuban team in their historic match against the Baltimore Orioles
Neglect of Sports Legends
According to Amaya's post, Urquiola's plight is not unique. Other Cuban sports legends, such as Félix Pino, Juan Carlos Oliva, Daniel Lazo, and the family of the late Reinaldo Costa, are also facing similar hardships. Unfortunately, Costa passed away without ever receiving the car he was waiting for.
The post received messages of support as well as criticism, with some pointing out that at least Urquiola has that old Lada to get by, "while other great sports figures in Cuba have died in utter poverty."
Amaya's public denunciation aims to mobilize authorities and society at large to ensure that important figures like Alfonso Urquiola, who have brought great glory to the country, are not forgotten and receive the support they need today.
