The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in the United States has confirmed the formation of Tropical Storm Helene in the northwestern Caribbean Sea. Forecasts suggest that Helene will rapidly intensify, potentially reaching hurricane strength in the next few hours. The NHC has issued warnings about the dangers posed by this storm to Cuba, the Yucatán Peninsula, and the southeastern coast of the United States, particularly Florida.

Rising Threat in the Northwestern Caribbean

Helene is developing over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, with storm surge and hurricane warnings already in effect for parts of Florida's Gulf Coast. The storm is expected to approach the northwestern Caribbean by Wednesday morning, at which point it may become a hurricane.

Impact on Cuba and the Caribbean Region

Authorities warn that tropical storm conditions will affect parts of western Cuba and the northeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. The western regions of Cuba are likely to experience hurricane-force winds. Helene is expected to bring heavy rainfall across Cuba, with the most intense downpours in the west, potentially leading to significant flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Local authorities have advised residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions due to the increased rainfall and risk of sudden flooding.

Growing Danger for Florida and the Southeastern US

The most significant threat is anticipated in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, where Helene could rapidly intensify into a major hurricane as it approaches the coast on Thursday. Florida officials have issued hurricane and tropical storm warnings for 41 counties, including several coastal areas, especially in the Panhandle and the state's west coast.

Experts warn of the potential for devastating storm surges and high winds, which could cause considerable damage. Residents in the warned areas have been urged to follow local authorities' recommendations and prepare for possible evacuations.

Flood Risk in the Southeastern United States

In addition to strong winds, Helene will bring heavy rains that could trigger flash flooding in parts of Florida and other southeastern US regions, including the southern Appalachians and Tennessee Valley. The rains are expected to begin on Wednesday and continue through Friday, raising the risk of minor to moderate flooding in some rivers.

Authorities are closely monitoring the storm's progression and recommend that the public stay tuned to weather updates.
