An enormous alligator was recently spotted near a bench at Black Point Marina in Cutler Bay, located in Miami-Dade County, reminding locals and visitors of the formidable presence of these reptiles, which are no less impressive despite being common in Florida. The popular Instagram account Only in Dade shared a video of the creature moving slowly, captioned with "Welcome to Jurassic Park."
In the comments section of the post, several users identified the massive reptile as a familiar sight for frequent visitors to the area, apparently nicknamed "Fred." Some commenters agreed that the alligator has likely been living in that area for at least 20 years.
Florida is home to approximately 1.3 million alligators. Their mating season starts in April and lasts until June. During this period, male alligators become more aggressive, often driving weaker ones out of their territory. This territorial behavior can lead to alligators traveling across hundreds of acres, increasing the chances of them appearing in residential pools, golf courses, or backyards.
While fatalities or serious injuries caused by alligators are rare in the state, authorities advise the public to maintain a safe distance from these reptiles, avoid feeding them, and swim only in designated areas during daylight hours. Residents are also encouraged to keep their pets leashed and away from the water's edge.
