The Cuban social media influencer Yaema Galguera (@yaemagalguera on TikTok) has shared her experiences living in South Carolina, weighing the pros and cons she's encountered since moving to this part of the United States.
Advantages of Life in South Carolina
Among the positive aspects, she highlights the pleasant climate of the area. While it's not quite like Florida, she says South Carolina enjoys all four seasons. "Here, the cold doesn't kill you; you can still go outside," she explains, noting that snow is rare and the weather is generally milder.
Another advantage, according to her, is the tranquility. Although some might think it’s a rural area, she assures that there are large stores and shopping centers like Walmart just minutes from her home. "Don't imagine it's a countryside; it's a spectacular and peaceful place," she comments in her video.
Yaema also mentions that safety is one of the most valuable aspects of the state. "You can leave your car unlocked, and no one will touch anything, same with packages," she asserts. She recounts that crime is almost non-existent and she can trust that her belongings will be safe, even if left at her doorstep. Additionally, she emphasizes the courtesy and respect among people: "People always greet you on the street, in stores, everywhere. You feel well-treated."
Moreover, she points out that car insurance is cheaper compared to other states like Florida. In her case, she pays $460 for two vehicles, a figure she claims others would pay for just one car in Florida. She also mentions that rent is more affordable than in other parts of the country.
Disadvantages of Life in South Carolina
However, not everything is perfect. Among the downsides, she mentions that all residents must pay taxes, including annual car taxes, which she finds high. "It's quite a significant annual amount," she comments, though she clarifies that she pays it gladly because "thanks to these taxes, my daughters attend spectacular schools."
Another negative point is the lack of job opportunities compared to other places. While she has been fortunate to find stable employment, she knows several people who have struggled to get jobs in the area. "There aren't as many job opportunities here as there are in other places," she notes. Additionally, with few Latinos and a limited Cuban community, it becomes more challenging to access certain resources or information that could make life easier for newcomers.
Lastly, she mentions that language can be another hurdle for those who are not fluent in English, warning that people who don't speak the language will face greater difficulties finding work in South Carolina.
