The Cuban regime has announced a reduction in the size of the bread included in the basic food basket, effective this Friday, September 13. The bread will now weigh 60 grams.

Anayra Cabrera Martínez, General Director of Industrial Policy at the Ministry of the Food Industry (MINAL), revealed that the low availability of wheat flour necessitates the reduction in bread weight from 80 grams to 60 grams. The price will also drop from one peso to 75 cents.

Cabrera Martínez explained that this is the only way to ensure the population can acquire bread daily without facing shortages like those experienced in recent months. She did note, however, that delays may occur as flour is being transported daily to all destinations, requiring significant logistical efforts.

She added that this change is not permanent and aims to avoid disrupting production while ensuring bread reaches the population and social consumption points. The reduction in weight should not affect the product's quality, and control over bakers will be strengthened to ensure compliance with standards.

The director specified that maintaining the bread ration production requires 700 tons of wheat flour daily. During the press conference, it was also announced that the Cuban Bread Chain would continue selling unrestricted bread, working alongside non-state management forms.
