Omara Durand and Mijaín López, two of the standout athletes who excelled at the Paris 2024 Games, both Paralympic and Olympic, were awarded a replica of the “Maceo's Machete,” a recognition given by the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR).

Clad in traditional Cuban guayaberas, which only a select group of Cubans can afford due to their high prices, the two athletes attended a ceremonial event in the FAR's Universal Hall. The event was attended by Minister Álvaro López Miera and other high-ranking officials of the ministry, as reported by the state-run site Cubadebate.

Yuniol Kindelán, Omara’s guide, received the Combat Brotherhood Medal, completing the trio of awardees recognized by the FAR. Omara, Mijaín, and Yuniol seemed to fare better than some of their fellow medalists from the Paris Olympics and Paralympics.

With limited resources, neighbors of Cuban Olympic medalist Yusneilys Guzmán, the first Cuban female wrestler to win a silver medal in the 50-kilogram freestyle category, welcomed her back from Paris to the Diez de Octubre municipality in Havana.

Another controversy arose when it was reported that Cuban triple jumper Andy Hechavarría allegedly sold the cell phone gifted to all athletes at the Olympics. Hechavarría was promoting the sale of the exclusive Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 limited edition for $900.

The announcement did not go unnoticed and quickly sparked various reactions among users, some of whom questioned his decision, while others understood his need to earn additional income due to the critical situation in Cuba, which even top athletes cannot escape.

The recipients of the replica machete of the man known as El Titán de Bronce (The Bronze Titan), considered "the most valiant of Cuban generals in the struggles for our independence," had outstanding performances in their respective disciplines. Both announced their retirement following their competitions in Paris.
