Animal Advocates in Sancti Spíritus Celebrate Recovery of Machete-Attacked Horse

Wednesday, September 11, 2024 by Oscar Fernandez

Animal advocates in the province of Sancti Spíritus are rejoicing over the favorable recovery of a horse that was brutally attacked with a machete last Sunday.

The ARCA Sancti Spíritus Foundation, which brought this unfortunate incident to light on social media, reported on Facebook this Tuesday that volunteers are following the treatment plan meticulously, under the guidance of Dr. Rodolfo Sori Barrionuevo.

Animal protectors in Sancti Spíritus have expressed their deep gratitude to everyone who contributed to the horse's recovery after the vicious attack: “Without your help, it would have been impossible,” they stated.

In particular, they highlighted the contributions of Dr. Fran, a veterinarian in Fomento, who donated essential medications for the horse’s treatment, and emphasized the unwavering support of the people of Sancti Spíritus, who have continuously shown concern for the horse’s health: “To everyone, infinite thanks.”

In a video, the horse was shown standing, with its wounds covered to prevent infection. They also explained that the horse is being given antibiotics and other medications, such as dextrose, metronidazole, and vitamin C, which are necessary for its recovery.

In their latest Facebook post, the ARCA Foundation requested support to obtain aluminum spray “for the wounds of the machete-attacked horse and to remove the bandages,” they noted.

While this horse was fortunate, such outcomes are not always the case. Social media is filled with incidents of abuse and mistreatment, highlighting the lack of protection for animals in Cuba and the regime's unwillingness to provide adequate safeguards.

Ongoing Animal Abuse in Cuba

In August, animal advocate Yenney Caballero reported another case of animal abuse in San José de las Lajas, Mayabeque, where horses used to pull carriages are forced to stand under the scorching sun, laden with heavy loads, while their owners rest in the shade. Caballero stated on Facebook that she witnessed firsthand the grim reality these animals face: while their caretakers shelter in the shade, chatting and laughing, the horses remain under the sun, dry and emaciated, with their heads hung low, burning like slaves.
