Another Injured Worker Discharged After Cement Factory Accident in Cienfuegos

Saturday, September 7, 2024 by Aaron Delgado

As expected, another worker from the five who suffered burns in the accident at the Cienfuegos cement factory last week was discharged from the hospital on Friday. Carlos Aguilar Sabina, 33, who was reported as less severe, had 12% burns. Since being admitted to the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Provincial Hospital, he showed favorable progress, and doctors anticipated that, being a young patient, he should not face significant difficulties. On Friday, after a dressing change, it was decided to discharge him and follow up through outpatient consultations.

Regarding the other two workers who are reported in serious and critical condition, Dr. Soraya Izaguirre Hernández, head of the burns unit at the hospital, told the Perlavisión telecenter that they continue to maintain stable hemodynamics and injury conditions. "They were treated today, and so far, they have not had any complications," she specified.

Dr. Izaguirre also commented on the clinical condition of Dionel Figueroa Calunga, 52, who has 70% burns and previously experienced hemodynamic instability and issues with his heart and lungs. "He has some stability, although he remains critically ill with all the repercussions of those severe injuries on his body, and we are monitoring his evolution closely," she said without providing further details.

Last Wednesday, August 28, the fifth injured worker in the accident was discharged. His name is Alexei Aguilar Valdes, 53, who had burns on 5% of his body and was able to return home after receiving treatment.

The previous day, an explosion occurred at the Carlos Marx Cement Factory in Cienfuegos, resulting in one worker's death, five injuries, and three others being trapped, presumably due to the explosion causing a hopper to fall, trapping them until firefighters rescued them.

The deceased was identified as Raymundo Narciso Sarría, 61, who worked as an electrician for the Empresa de Construcciones Ingenieras No. 6 (Ecoing-6).
