Cubans in Miami Send Crucial Medicine to Children in Cuba

Thursday, September 5, 2024 by Grace Ramos

A group of Cubans in Miami has organized a collection of medicines to donate to dozens of children and elderly individuals suffering from illnesses in Cuba. Amid the ongoing health crisis and severe shortages plaguing the country, the administrator of the Pesca en Miami website coordinated this donation, which will soon reach around fifty families on the island.

The packages are personalized, each including a thermometer, specific medications for the children’s ailments, and some essential items. Preparing such donations from Miami to Cuba requires significant time and effort. The volunteers work on assembling the packages during their limited free time, yet they believe the effort is worth it due to the gratitude they receive from those in need.

"Everything is done with verification. The people who have contacted me have sent their medical reports," said the coordinator. "I don't have the money to send packages to Cuba; we do this thanks to José Ramírez's agency, one of the key supporters of this cause," he added.

Those wishing to donate items to Cuba from the United States can contact Pesca en Miami through the contact numbers listed on their social media pages. There is an urgent need for medicines, food, and mosquito nets, as the government does not provide these despite the health crisis caused by dengue and Oropouche virus.

The Pesca en Miami group and "José's agency" have previously collaborated on other donations for Cubans, including support for influencer and comedian Limay Blanco. In April, this group conducted a significant collection of essential items, food, and medicines that benefited hundreds of Cuban families.

Fever cases are being reported across the island, particularly due to the rise in Oropouche virus and dengue, both transmitted by mosquitoes. Pharmacies are empty, lacking analgesics and antipyretics to treat children's fevers. This harsh reality has motivated the group of Cubans in the United States to show their solidarity with those in vulnerable situations on the island.
