Safe Transit Measures Launched for Migrants with CBP One Appointments in Mexico

Wednesday, September 4, 2024 by Mia Dominguez

The National Institute of Migration of Mexico (INM) has initiated an "Emergent Safe Mobility Corridor" aimed at foreign individuals with confirmed appointments in the CBP One application, facilitating their migration process to the United States. This corridor, designed to ensure the safety of migrants during their journey, will enable transportation in escorted buses, providing protection for those seeking to reach border points securely.

Journalist Mario J. Pentón highlighted this measure, noting that the trips will be escorted by authorities to ensure the migrants' safety, addressing growing concerns about the risks they face on their route. This initiative focuses on migrants in southern Mexico and is part of an inter-institutional strategy to ensure a safe, orderly, and humane migration process.

The official statement from the INM indicates that this project aims to support the land transport of foreign individuals with CBP One appointments, giving priority to family units to travel together and remain united during the journey. Mexican authorities have established two departure points: one at the Migratory Station in Villahermosa, Tabasco, and the other at the Southern Zone Migration Regulation Office in Tapachula, Chiapas.

The INM will also provide migrants with the Multiple Migratory Form (FMM), valid for 20 days, allowing them to have a regular stay status during their journey to the scheduled entry point. This document will permit migrants to circulate legally in Mexican territory while heading to their appointment.

In addition to the security escort, the buses enabled for these transfers will offer food to passengers, reinforcing the commitment of Mexican authorities to ensure a dignified and safe journey. The accompaniment of federal, state, and municipal security forces aims to mitigate the risks migrants may face on their way.

To date, 300 individuals who requested their appointment through the CBP One application in Tabasco and Chiapas have received responses within a few days, which, according to the Mexican government, demonstrates the efficiency in managing the process. Since August 23, the United States government has expanded the use of the CBP One application to allow migrants in southern Mexico, including Cubans, to manage their appointment. Previously, this option was only available in the northern and central regions of the country.
