Just hours after a major traffic accident left nine injured in Santiago de Cuba, another road mishap occurred in the province on Wednesday. A passenger transport truck collided with a motorbike on a main avenue in the capital city.

In a Facebook post, communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported that the crash happened because the truck driver ignored a red traffic light. He also mentioned that it was unclear whether the motorbike rider was injured.

“Another traffic accident took place on Victoriano Garzón Avenue in Santiago de Cuba when a red passenger transport truck ran a red light and hit a motorbike passing by,” Mayeta stated. “So far, the exact details of the incident and the health status of the motorbike rider are unknown.”

There has been no update on the incident as of yet.

In the comments, netizens criticized the lack of caution by drivers who frequently violate traffic laws, endangering their lives and those of others. Some expressed alarm at the numerous accidents occurring in the eastern province.

Motorbike-related incidents, particularly involving the increasingly popular motorbikes known as "motorinas," continue to make headlines. Just the day before, a collision between one of these electric motorbikes and a gasoline-powered one in downtown Santiago de Cuba led to injuries for both drivers, who were taken to a hospital.

Additionally, on Tuesday, a young motorcyclist lost his life while driving on Quinta Avenida in Miramar, Havana.

On early Sunday morning, a teenager died instantly after being hit by a motorbike in Santiago de Cuba. Kevin Quiala Suárez, 16, was fatally struck after leaving a bar where he had been hanging out with friends.

Although official statistics showed a 13% decrease in traffic accidents (543 fewer) in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2023, the frequent and severe nature of road incidents in the country remains a serious concern.
