Amazon Driver Charged with Hitting Mother and Baby in Miami-Dade

Sunday, August 25, 2024 by Daniel Vasquez

Sarahy Naybeth Parra-Ovalles, an Amazon driver, has been arrested and charged for hitting a mother and her four-month-old baby in a residential area of Miami-Dade, and then fleeing the scene. Parra-Ovalles, 45, who was driving a 2022 Hyundai SUV, faces two counts of leaving the scene of an accident and causing serious bodily injury, according to Telemundo 51.

According to the arrest report, the incident occurred on August 22 at approximately 8:48 a.m. at Northeast 7th Avenue and 191st Street. The mother involved suffered a brain hemorrhage as a result of the incident. Surveillance footage accessed by the police shows the accused making deliveries in the neighborhood around 8:30 a.m.

The video also shows the victim, a 30-year-old woman, walking her baby in a stroller accompanied by a dog. The arrest report indicates that as the woman was crossing the avenue at the crosswalk, she was struck by Parra-Ovalles, who allegedly turned into “opposing traffic lanes,” causing the woman to fall backward onto the pavement and the stroller with the baby to topple over. Parra-Ovalles then got out of the car, approached the mother, fixed the stroller, placed the baby back inside, and drove away.

The victims were taken to the hospital, where the woman was treated for a skull fracture, contusions, and a brain hemorrhage. The baby sustained a laceration on the forehead, according to police.

During the investigation, police gathered statements from neighbors and the gate guard. A witness inside his home reported hearing a child crying and a vehicle horn. When he looked out his window, he saw a woman wearing an Amazon Prime vest next to a gray SUV, looking around. Moments later, he saw her drive away.

Police summoned Parra-Ovalles to the station for an interview, during which she admitted to making deliveries and seeing the victims. She also stated that she drove alongside them and was concerned for the mother, who seemed “disoriented.”

After her arrest, Parra-Ovalles was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. An Amazon spokesperson commented on the incident, saying, “This is a terrible incident, and our thoughts are with this family. We are investigating the matter and will support the authorities as they conduct their investigation. The driver in question is no longer delivering on Amazon’s behalf.”
