Journalist Mario Vallejo has shed light on the incident where Cuban dissident and influencer Manuel Milanés was shot on Thursday morning. Vallejo reported that Milanés was witnessing a domestic altercation between a man and a woman with two children in front of his house in the Ave Maria community, located in Collier County.
The situation escalated when the man, identified later as 26-year-old Hilberto Callejas, rammed his vehicle into the woman's car. He then exited his vehicle, approached the victim's car, and smashed a window with a firearm, according to local Sheriff Kevin Rambosk.
Vallejo's account suggests that Milanés intervened to defend the woman and her children. At that moment, Callejas shot him. The police described the incident as a severe case of domestic violence that tragically escalated when Callejas shot a bystander who tried to intervene.
"A witness—apparently Milanés—saw what was happening and confronted Callejas, who shot him in the shoulder before fleeing the scene, prompting a police chase," Rambosk explained.
Vallejo stated that Milanés was shot three times, although the police only confirmed one shot to the shoulder. The altercation took place shortly before 9 a.m. in Ave Maria. Sheriff's deputies were dispatched after reports of a domestic violence incident, and a chase ensued when Callejas fled.
"Detectives identified Callejas' vehicle as it left Ave Maria. Officers pursued him until he abandoned his car at the intersection of 60th Avenue Northeast and Everglades Boulevard," Rambosk said.
After abandoning his vehicle, Callejas fled on foot into nearby woods, according to the sheriff. The gunman now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and child abuse, among others.
Milanés was airlifted to the hospital and underwent surgery, Vallejo confirmed.
