Emigrant Defends Against Being Called Cowards: "Few Dare to Brave the Sea"

Thursday, August 22, 2024 by Sophia Martinez

A Cuban living in the United States has firmly responded to those who label emigrants as cowards, arguing that leaving one's homeland and facing an uncertain future requires immense courage. The young man, known as Arguelles Positivo (@arguelles364), expressed his deep admiration on TikTok for those who, like himself, decided to flee Cuba and start anew in another country.

"I heard someone say that we emigrants are cowards because we run away from our country," the Cuban remarked. "We, the emigrants, have a big heart in the middle of our chest."

The young man went on to list the reasons he believes make emigrants courageous. He mentioned that not everyone is willing to leave their life behind and start from scratch. "Not everyone is willing to risk their lives on an uncertain journey, on a raft, to cross a jungle, to traverse dozens of countries, without money or food," he noted.

Arguelles Positivo argued that for someone born in a country full of opportunities, like the United States, it's easy to criticize. "But if you were born in Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and other developing countries, you understand the need to emigrate, because all people want the best, to see their families well, we want to prosper, to be free."

"Emigrating is not for cowards. On the contrary, it is for brave people," he emphasized. "Brave are those who face life to protect their loved ones, to feed them, and to give them a better life."

Arguelles Positivo's Inspirational Messages

The TikToker has also shared reflective and inspiring messages on other occasions, some directed at those who achieved their goal of reaching the United States. "You fulfilled your dream and made it to the United States, you arrived at the yuma, so congratulations and blessings," Argüelles began his reflection, aiming to "say what no one tells you, but I will tell you in a way of learning, so you know what you will face from now on."

In another instance, he sparked debate around the stereotype that "Cubans don't work." In his reflection, the TikToker addressed this issue, highlighting the various and strenuous jobs many island-born individuals undertake.
