Neighbors Help Extinguish Car Fire on Cuban Street

Thursday, August 22, 2024 by Hannah Aguilar

The hood of a Peugeot 306 with state plates caught fire on Thursday morning. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities, thanks to the quick actions of the driver and the residents of the street where the incident occurred.

In a video shared in the Facebook group “ACCIDENTES BUSES & CAMIONES por más experiencia y menos víctimas!,” the driver can be seen using a fire extinguisher to control the flames. Simultaneously, neighbors assisted with buckets of water to ensure that no flames remained under the hood, which was difficult to open.

“My car once caught fire, and the first thing I did was open the hood and put out the fire completely,” commented one user, emphasizing the importance of this action in fully extinguishing a blaze.

Other users noted the significance of the driver having a fire extinguisher, which played a crucial role in preventing the fire from spreading. "This highlights the importance of having a fire extinguisher," pointed out one user.

Another user added that “the state should have a place to sell extinguishers; since this was a state vehicle, it had one, but private owners might not have access because they can’t find them.”

However, one user responded that extinguishers are available in private businesses. "They do exist because my husband bought one recently, and for refills, they go to SEISA. Check online; they are available. My husband paid 2,000 Cuban pesos just a month ago," she added.

Car fires have become more common in Cuba in recent times. At the end of July, for example, a Chevrolet caught fire at a central intersection in El Vedado, Havana. Days later, it was revealed that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the vehicle.

“I was in line to get fuel when it suffered a short circuit, and nothing could be done,” said Heber Montes de Oca, apparently the driver of the vehicle.

On the National Highway, specifically in the section that runs through Villa Clara Province, four people, including a minor, lost their lives when their vehicle hit a bridge and subsequently caught fire.
