Description not available

The Cuban exile community in Miami is preparing to nominate Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for the Nobel Peace Prize. The event is scheduled to take place at noon on August 16 at the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora.

Machado will be nominated for her "courageous fight in defense of democracy and human rights in Venezuela, which has made her deserving of this international honor."

The support for the nomination will be formalized at an event titled: “Venezuela Won: Global Protest for Truth, Glory to the Brave People!” which will be held on Saturday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m. at Bayfront Park in Miami. During this event, the four institutions backing Machado's nomination will be revealed.

Global Protest Set for Saturday

In recent hours, María Corina Machado addressed Venezuelans both inside and outside the country, ahead of the global protest scheduled in over 300 cities worldwide this Saturday, August 17, in support of the true results of the July 28 elections, where victory was allegedly stolen from Edmundo González by Nicolás Maduro.

"A significant day is approaching this Saturday, August 17. We all know what we've done and what we've achieved, victory after victory. We raised a country, held primaries, and brought Edmundo to a presidential election against all odds and arbitrary actions. We won, and the world now knows it," said María Corina in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The protest aims to highlight the official records showing that Edmundo González Urrutia garnered 67% of the votes, compared to Nicolás Maduro's 30%. Organizers have asked attendees to bring printed copies of their electoral records "so the world can see our strength and to make it clear to the regime that we will not be stopped."

In response, the Chavismo has organized a counter-march in Caracas to try to limit popular support for the opposition. However, Machado emphasized that a new phase has begun, "which is to assert popular sovereignty and the truth to move towards a democratic transition."

The opposition leader described the regime as "exposed," lacking legitimacy, and resorting to violence "to try to intimidate, demoralize, and divide us, but it has not succeeded and will not succeed."

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) reported on Thursday that the Chavismo has established "state terrorism" to curb the protests, with repression that has already claimed 24 lives and led to over 2,400 detentions, of which the Penal Forum has verified at least 1,400, including 118 minors. In recent hours, two 13-year-old children have been released.
