Minimum Wage in Florida to Rise to $13 per Hour Starting September

Workers in the state of Florida who are paid hourly will see an increase in the minimum wage starting this September 30th. The minimum income will rise from $12 to $13 per hour.

According to an amendment approved by Florida voters in 2020, the wage will continue to increase until it reaches $15 per hour in September 2026. Since the approval of Amendment 2 to the state constitution in November 2020, Florida's minimum wage has been increasing by $1 annually. Starting in 2027, it will adjust based on annual inflation.

For tipped workers, the minimum wage will be $9.98 per hour. Employers must pay their employees the state minimum wage for all hours worked. Those who do not receive the minimum wage can initiate a civil action against the employer or any individual who violates Florida's minimum wage law.

In November 2020, 60% of Florida voters approved the amendment to gradually increase the state’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2026. The amendment specifies that the $15 per hour wage will be effective until December 31, 2027. Indexed increases based on inflation will commence in 2028.

This phased increase aims to provide a continuous improvement in the earnings of Florida's workers, ensuring that their wages keep pace with inflation and the cost of living in the state.

As of 2024, the federal minimum wage in the United States is $7.25 per hour for covered, non-exempt workers. This rate has remained unchanged for 14 years. However, more than 30 states have set their minimum wages above this federal rate.
