An animal advocate in Havana discovered a cat writhing in pain on the street due to acid burns. Overwhelmed by the sight, she immediately decided to rescue the feline. Yucimì Duarte shared on the Facebook group "Adopciones de Mascotas en Cuba" that the cat, with its striking white fur and green eyes, was saved thanks to Duarte's preparedness. She had a blanket, harnesses, a water container, and some food with her.

"She was like a wild beast," Duarte remarked. She managed to wrap the cat and transport her to a safe place. After sedating the cat, she discovered that someone had doused it with acid, causing severe skin injuries. Despite being bitten and scratched during the healing process, the rescuer persevered with the necessary care.

After seven days in the shelter, the cat began showing signs of recovery. "Today she is a different cat," said Duarte with relief, explaining that the wounds are healing and the skin is gradually regenerating.

"I don't know what she might have done, but the end doesn't justify the means," noted the animal lover. Her story has moved many, highlighting both the cruelty that animals still face in Cuba and the compassion and determination of those who rescue them, despite shortages and hardships.

Recently, animal protectors sought help for a cat missing part of its face, spotted on a street in Havana. Dianeya Pérez reported in the Facebook group "Sociedad Protectora de Animales en Cuba" that the cat was found in Lawton, "on Gertrudis Street between Second and First."

However, animal advocates often experience deep frustration over the lack of governmental action in protecting pets. They have reported that the extreme food shortages in Cuba have led to an increase in the illegal hunting and commercialization of cat meat in areas like Guantanamo.

This disturbing and dangerous practice was documented in an article by the Food Monitor Program, revealing how food scarcity in the eastern region of the country forces residents to consume cat meat, posing public health risks and violating animal welfare laws.
