Tiktoker Reflects on "Cubans and Their Ways": We Exaggerate but Deliver, Because We Do It Well

Monday, August 12, 2024 by Matthew Diaz

A young Cuban living in Madrid, known as @elixir_karen on TikTok, recently posted a video highlighting, with humor, the ability of many Cubans to adapt and often exaggerate their capabilities. In her video, titled "Cubans and Their Ways," the content creator shared how Cubans often become self-proclaimed experts in various fields.

"It amuses me because I see videos of Cubans, and we are absolute survivors," she remarked at the beginning of her video. "If we lose weight, we become nutrition coaches and want to sell plans and countless things online. If we exercise and see progress in three months, we become personal trainers," the young woman said in her light-hearted reflection, letting humor take the lead as she detailed more everyday situations.

"If we cook three dishes, we become chefs and start selling recipe guides. If we watch three makeup videos, we become professional makeup artists," she continued. "And let's not even mention that every time we go for a job, we claim to have the highest experience. If it's waiting tables, 'Oh, I was a waiter for ages in Cuba, practically a restaurant manager,'” she added.

The video concluded with a proud statement: "That's why I'm so proud of my Cubans. I'm like that too; we are survivors, and the best part is that we do it well. We exaggerate, but we can exaggerate because, in the end, we do it well."

Her words received supportive and humorous reactions from TikTok users: "I'm the best at picking spinach and planting cabbages here in this field"; "We were taught to lie and forced to live in it"; "Cubans know how to do everything, and what they don't know, they invent, but they do it well"; "That's right"; "I read tarot cards"; "You made me laugh, but that's how we are"; "You are a strong and brave woman"; "We exaggerate, but we do it well"; "We invent things on the fly, and quickly, today I was thinking about that, and we're very resourceful"; "Confirmed."
