Street in Havana Shuts Down Due to Massive Garbage Pileup

Sunday, August 11, 2024 by Alex Smith

A social media user shared a video this Sunday showing a street closure in Havana caused by an overwhelming accumulation of garbage, highlighting the regime's inaction in addressing this issue. Yulier Rodríguez posted a reel on Facebook displaying the massive pileup of waste in the Diez de Octubre municipality: “This is how the Luyano neighborhood – Havana looks,” he stated.

In the video, Rodríguez showcased Pedro Pernas and Manuel Pruna streets, where the garbage accumulation has reached such an extent that it is impossible for vehicles to pass through. “What a disgusting mess!” exclaimed the video’s author, while focusing on a micro-dump that clearly hasn't been cleaned up in several days.

A similar scene was reported this Saturday on social media. A video posted on social networks revealed the severe crisis in garbage collection in Havana, where popular corners have been overtaken by heaps of solid waste. The material, published on Instagram by Juan Juan Almeida, shows the corner of Lealtad and San Lázaro in Centro Habana, transformed into a massive dump.

The collection of solid waste in Cuba has been such a recurring problem that the regime recently announced it is seeking support from foreign investors to resolve the crisis in waste management, especially in Havana, where the increase in garbage endangers the health of thousands of people. Granma reported that several foreign investors have presented their solutions to address the garbage issue in Havana's Integrated Waste Management System. The regime claims that there are more than ten foreign investment projects in this area.
