Man Surrenders to Police After Killing Ex-Partner and Her Mother in Miami

Sunday, August 11, 2024 by Richard Morales

Exclusive footage obtained by Local 10 shows Cuban national Carlos Alexander Travieso turning himself in to West Miami police in December, following the murders of his ex-partner, Isbelsy Olivera (22), and her mother, Irisbel Cartalla (50), both also of Cuban origin.

In the video, Travieso is seen sitting calmly in the West Miami police station moments before officers enter and place him in handcuffs. Travieso, 49, has been in custody since then without bail, facing two counts of first-degree murder. His next court appearance is scheduled for the end of this month.

The Crime

On the morning of December 13, 2023, Carlos Travieso broke into an apartment on the ninth floor of the Flagami condominium where his ex-partner and her mother lived and killed them both. After the shootings, Travieso fled the scene but later surrendered to authorities. Mother and daughter were natives of Camagüey and had recently arrived from Cuba.

Earlier posts on Facebook showed Isbelsy and Carlos appearing happy, with Carlos even proposing marriage to her, a situation that evidently changed. The last posts before the double homicide indicated that Travieso was experiencing emotional turmoil before committing the crime.

On November 25, Travieso bid farewell to Miami and headed to Phoenix, Arizona, according to his social media. He returned to Facebook on December 3, with subsequent posts—made just before the double murder—addressing his family, including his children, with a tone of nostalgia and farewell. These posts included brief, enigmatic phrases hinting at a goal.

The climax was a post on December 10, three days before the crime, in which he wrote, "Thank you God for forgiving me, I am ready for everything, amen" [sic], along with a clip from a preacher's video.
