Gabriel Rosillo, the Cuban wrestling champion, faced a tough defeat this Tuesday against Armenian wrestler Artur Alexanyan (3-5) in a highly anticipated match, missing out on the chance to compete for the gold medal in the 97-kilogram Greco-Roman wrestling category at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In what many viewed as a premature final, the wrestler from Santiago, who claimed the world title in Belgrade 2023, showcased his full range of techniques. However, he couldn't overcome Alexanyan, a four-time world champion and Rio 2016 gold medalist. Rosillo will now have to compete for the bronze medal to avoid leaving the tournament empty-handed, while Alexanyan avenged his defeat in the last world championship final.

Before this critical match, Rosillo had to make a remarkable comeback to defeat German wrestler Lukas Lazogianis (7-5) in his opening bout. He then eliminated Finnish wrestler Arvi Savolainen 5-2 in the quarterfinals.

Three years ago at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Cuba secured a silver medal in this weight class—competed then at 98 kilograms—when Yasmani Lugo surprised many by reaching the final.

In other news, Yusneilys Guzmán (50 kg) is set to face Indian wrestler Vinesh Vinesh in the semifinals. Guzmán made an impressive debut by defeating the favored Turkish wrestler Evi Demirhan (7-6) and then won decisively (10-0) against Lithuanian wrestler Gabija Dilyte in the quarterfinals. "La Chiqui," as she is affectionately known, has already made history by becoming the first female Cuban wrestler to win two matches in Olympic games, showcasing her rise after reigning at the Santiago de Chile 2023 Pan American Games.

Additionally, the entire island of Cuba will be on edge today as two of its wrestling icons, Mijaín López and Yasmani Acosta, who now represents Chile, clash in the final of the 130-kilogram Greco-Roman wrestling category. López, considered the "GOAT" of the sport, will be vying for his fifth Olympic title after consecutive victories in Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020.
