Mons. Antoine Camilleri, the new representative of Pope Francis in Cuba, was welcomed by the island's bishops during a ceremony last Tuesday.

The new Apostolic Nuncio, originally from the island of Malta, had previously been in Cuba in 2005 and 2006 as a member of the Vatican's diplomatic mission in Havana. He has now returned to the Caribbean nation after 18 years, as reported by ACI Prensa.

On May 20th, Pope Francis appointed him as his representative in Cuba. After this designation, and having served as apostolic nuncio in countries in Oceania and Africa, the prelate has returned to the Americas. The Communications Office of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba (COCC), cited by ACI Prensa, stated that the prelate presented his credentials to the president of the Cuban Episcopate, Mons. Emilio Aranguren, who expressed gratitude for his presence in the country.

A Warm Welcome and Future Missions

According to the COCC, "the new nuncio had the opportunity to get to know this people and this church. He was informed that the Cuban bishops wish to maintain a close bond of communion between the Pope, the nunciature in Cuba, and the small episcopal college he presides over."

The prelate expressed his joy at returning to the place that welcomed him 18 years ago and offered his assistance and support to advance the mission of the church on the island, as indicated in the communiqué.

Mons. Camilleri is the third nuncio appointed by Pope Francis for Cuba and the eleventh Vatican representative in the country since 1948. Currently, Cuba has 11 dioceses, 12 bishops (including 2 auxiliary and 4 emeritus).

In 2019, Pope Francis appointed Monsignor Giampiero Gloder, titular Archbishop of Telde (Spain), as apostolic nuncio in Cuba. This announcement came shortly after the Pope elevated the new Archbishop of Havana, Juan de la Caridad García, to the rank of cardinal.
