Allegations of widespread irregularities at polling stations have marred this Sunday's presidential election in Venezuela, according to numerous reports on social media.

The news portal UHN Plus revealed on X that an electoral official assaulted a person at the National University Rómulo Gallegos in the state of Guárico. Additionally, the official reportedly blocked some voters from entering.

Meanwhile, user Mr. Liberal reported that Chavistas had taken control of several polling centers. A similar complaint was highlighted by the site La Posta, stating, "Less than two hours in and already dozens of issues are being reported in the Venezuelan presidential elections. These include allegations of irregularities in the setup of polling stations, the expulsion of international observers, and the repression of opposition supporters."

At the same time, social media user Geanfranco Speranza noted that people were being barred from entering the National Experimental University Simón Rodríguez in the city of Acarigua.

Polling stations in Venezuela opened at 6:00 a.m. for an election that could potentially spell the end for dictator Nicolás Maduro, the current president, if polling predictions hold true. Surveys indicate that his rival has a lead of more than 20 points.

Maduro himself assured, upon voting in the morning, that he would respect and ensure the respect of the election results issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE) at the end of the day, and called upon his rivals to commit to doing the same.

“No one will bring Venezuela into chaos; we have an electoral referee for that. I, Nicolás Maduro, commit to respecting the electoral referee and invite all parties to respect the governing body,” he said in statements to the media after casting his ballot in Caracas, accompanied by his wife, the country’s first lady and deputy, Cilia Flores.
