Sunday, July 28, 2024 by Alex Smith

Nicolás Maduro visited the grave of Hugo Chávez early Sunday morning, marking what would have been the late leader's 70th birthday. Maduro, who took power after Chávez's death in 2013 with the support of Cuban intelligence services, chose this significant day to set the date for elections that could potentially restore freedom to his people.

Hours before heading to his polling station, Maduro, accompanied by National Assembly deputy Cilia Flores, went to the so-called Cuartel de la Montaña — formerly the Military Museum — and laid a floral tribute at Chávez's tomb.

The dictator declared that today's Venezuelans are fighting their own Battle of Carabobo, striving for peace, national independence, tranquility, the right to a future, and a new economy. He emphasized, "the victory of those who love Venezuela."

"In his honor, today we will fight a great battle for peace, life, and the future," Maduro stated.

This Sunday at 6:00 am, 30,026 polling stations opened their doors to receive over 21,392,000 Venezuelans aged 18 and older who are eligible to exercise their democratic rights. An additional 69,211 Venezuelans are able to vote from abroad.
