A Cuban resident of Hialeah was arrested this Wednesday for causing a traffic accident that resulted in serious injuries to three people, including a five-month-old baby, after running a red light while driving under the influence.

The Hialeah Police Department reported that Didier Durán Peña, 45, was the driver who failed to stop at a red light near the intersection of West Eighth Avenue and West 29th Avenue in Hialeah on July 22, leading to a collision with another vehicle shortly before 8:30 p.m.

Accident Details and Witness Accounts

According to witnesses and CCTV footage, Durán was the driver and sole occupant of a white 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan that collided with a red 2016 Nissan Altima, local media reported.

As a result of the impact, the Nissan's driver suffered a lung contusion and severe spleen laceration. The front seat passenger sustained multiple rib fractures and abdominal fluid accumulation, while the baby, who was in the back seat, also suffered multiple rib fractures.

Medical personnel who arrived at the scene noted that Durán had a "strong odor of alcohol," "red and glassy eyes," and "difficulty speaking." According to the arrest report, Durán admitted to drinking several beers earlier in the day but could not specify the amount.

Durán was taken to Hialeah Hospital where, under police order, a blood test confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The accused faces three charges of driving under the influence and causing serious bodily injury. As of Thursday, he was held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with bail set at $30,000.

According to his social media profile, Durán is originally from Ciego de Ávila.
