Cuban Woman Shares Her Struggle to Find Housing in Miami

Wednesday, July 24, 2024 by Daniel Colon

A Cuban woman took to TikTok to share her frustration after over a week of searching for a rental in Miami. "I need you to make me understand, because I am frozen," begins the video by user @la_yami_87, who referred to the strict and, in her view, incomprehensible requirements for renting in the city.

"I need to have a credit score above 680, and I have to earn three times the rent," lamented @la_yami_87, who works 40 hours a week at $13.50 per hour. She also criticized the practices of associations charging fees for applications and other administrative expenses. "You are all scammers, and I mean it. If the property owner tells me yes, I still have to wait for you, the association, who charges me $100 for the application, $300 for administrative expenses, plus $500 to hold the property I want to rent," she reproached. She also expressed her desperation, explaining that if she is not approved, she loses the money invested in these applications.

Users on the network reacted to the video by sharing their experiences and frustrations: "I lived in Las Vegas and renting was not nearly as difficult as here"; "If I make $9,000, I’ll move to Brickell"; "Imagine my husband applied for an apartment, and my cousin also submitted her papers. Between the two, they made almost $90,000 annually, we were charged $250 for the application, and we were still denied"; "You’re absolutely right, I live in Hialeah and right now you need at least $8,000 to rent even an efficiency"; "I stayed in Miami for six months. I hated it. I moved to Louisiana. $800 for a 2/1 and $500 deposit"; "That's Miami for you. It's not like that here in Houston"; "Renting is the same throughout most of Florida"; "Believe me, years ago when I rented, it wasn’t like this. It has gone downhill in recent years"; "It’s truly a scam"; "It wasn’t like this years ago," many opined.
