Hialeah Police officers fatally shot an armed Cuban man during a confrontation that began with a domestic violence incident in a neighborhood of the Miami-Dade County city in Florida last Friday.

The man was identified as Rubén Manresa, a resident of Hialeah originally from Aguacate in the Madruga municipality, Mayabeque province, reported crime journalist Niover Licea on social media.

The events occurred around 7:00 a.m. in the area of W 53rd Street and 5th Avenue in West Hialeah. Officers responded to a 911 emergency call about a domestic altercation, according to local media.

Upon arrival, officers found the Cuban man holding a firearm. At some point, they instructed him to lower the weapon, but he allegedly refused to comply with their commands, forcing the officers to fire their weapons, resulting in his death, according to the police version.

Steadman Stahl, from the Police Benevolent Association, told Telemundo51 that "when the officers arrived, they encountered an armed individual who was given numerous orders to lower the weapon, a weapon that was later pointed at the officers, who then had to shoot, killing this person on the spot."

According to Licea's report, Manresa had been living in Florida for about two years after arriving in the United States through a family reunification process.

Sources close to the family revealed to Telemundo that the Cuban man and his wife had recently separated after a decade of marriage, which may have been the cause of the tragic incident.

The investigation into the incident is being handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), a standard procedure in cases involving police officers.
