Although it already supplies thousands of barrels of crude oil to its political ally, Russia is considering building an oil refinery in Cuba, as revealed during the visit of several parliamentarians to the island.

Among the official discussions, this idea emerged as a central point, especially since the Eurasian nation resumed fuel shipments in March after a year-long hiatus, according to Reuters citing the Tass agency.

The Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel shared on the social network X that he held talks with the president of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Viacheslav Volodin, who heads the visiting delegation. Through the Presidencia Cuba account, the regime also reported on the meeting.

"Cuba has crude oil: it is logical not to import petroleum products, but to produce them here," legislator Alexander Babakov told TASS. "The largest Russian companies could participate here," he added.

As known, Venezuela is the main supplier of oil to Cuba, but shipments have decreased recently due to the socio-political situation in the South American territory. However, last year, Mexico also exported significant amounts of oil, but the flow was not consistent.

In March, Moscow sent its first tanker in several months, according to EFE. The shipment consisted of 650,000 barrels of crude oil aimed at helping the island amid protests over the lack of energy and food in the country.
