The Ministry of Commerce has announced the distribution of a free food package in Sancti Spíritus, the province hosting the upcoming national event for July 26th. This initiative is presented as a "gift" to the population for earning this "distinction."

Eliosbel Martínez Hernández, director of the Food Wholesale Company in the region, explained that the 190,816 existing households will receive two kilograms of rice, one kilogram of sugar, one kilogram of pasta, and two cans of sardines.

According to Martínez Hernández, containers with these products have been arriving from Ciego de Ávila since late last week. "There are a total of 48 containers, and once all the products are gathered, we will start distributing the packages to the population. We expect all containers to arrive within this week," he told the Escambray newspaper.

Martínez Hernández stated that all logistics have been organized to ensure swift transportation in coordination with the provincial government. "Our teams are already working on assembling the packages and preparing for distribution to ensure they reach the population as quickly as possible," he emphasized.

In the midst of the current economic crisis in Cuba, the government is distributing free food packages, though these do little to resolve the chronic shortages experienced by most families. These packages started being distributed for free following the donations that arrived in Cuba after the July 11 protests and due to public complaints that the state was selling donated food.

The government began distributing these well-known free packages in Havana in July 2021. Initially, the products were donations from Mexico, Russia, Nicaragua, and Bolivia in response to the protests. The first package included spaghetti, Chinese beans, rice, and sugar.
