Puerto Rican Celebrities Compete in "Super Chef" with Cuban Recipes

Tuesday, July 16, 2024 by Abigail Marquez

Influencers and artists from Puerto Rico have put their culinary skills to the test on the popular Wapa Televisión reality show, Super Chef Celebrities, by preparing traditional Cuban recipes. It is important to remember that Cuba has been suffering from a food crisis for decades, which has worsened in the last three years due to the misguided economic policies of the regime. These recipes are becoming a rarity among the island’s population, who lack the resources to make them regularly at home.

Super Chef Celebrities premiered on May 21 and has captivated the audience by bringing together twelve well-known Puerto Rican personalities from various fields such as acting, music, hosting, sports, dance, modeling, fashion, and social media content creation. Now, in its semifinal phase, the contestants are challenged to prepare traditional dishes from Cuban cuisine.

Semifinal Challenge: Cuban Cuisine

The jury, composed of chefs Enrique Piñeiro, Giovanna Huyke, and “pitmaster” José Edgardo Lucca, has tested the participants with a Cuban menu that includes:

Appetizer: Cod fritters

Main course: Chicken stuffed with congrí rice

Dessert: Sweet corn pudding, also a common dish in Puerto Rican cooking

Puerto Rican actress Yaiza Figueroa, one of the competitors, mentioned that her father-in-law is Cuban, making these recipes familiar to her, particularly the congrí, one of her favorite rice dishes. "For heaven's sake! I need to do it right so my husband and father-in-law are proud," she said, laughing.

In preparing the congrí rice, the contestants used canned black beans to speed up the process. The Puerto Rican chefs suggested a trick you can try if you're short on time. The “cheat” involves using a splash of red wine when preparing the sofrito to give the congrí its characteristic color, even when using pre-cooked beans.

The reality show has not only put the contestants under pressure with surprise recipes and limited time but also pushed them out of their comfort zones. Such was the case with influencer Miss Gala, the most recent contestant to be eliminated from the competition. Known for her fashion content on social media, Miss Gala faced the challenge of adapting her usual structure and order to the unpredictable environment of a culinary contest.

Super Chef Celebrities has managed not only to entertain but also to highlight the richness and diversity of Caribbean cuisine, blending Cuban tradition with Puerto Rican talent in an exciting and delicious culinary challenge.
