Deep sorrow has enveloped the medical community of Santiago de Cuba following the untimely death of Dr. Yaimarelis Pico Carela on Friday at the age of just 44. Aris Arias Batalla, Provincial Head of Operations and Relief, Water Safety in Santiago de Cuba, announced the passing on Facebook, highlighting that Dr. Pico had "fought her illness for over 15 years, battling a painful and terrible disease, serving as both doctor and patient simultaneously."

In another post, Arias shared a public thank you that the late doctor had conveyed to the medical team of the hematology ward at Juan Bruno Zayas Clinical-Surgical Hospital. He remarked, "They never gave up and worked tirelessly for an extended period to alleviate her physical pains with treatments aimed at prolonging her life. Unfortunately, the final diagnosis was known, and nothing was hidden from her as she, being a doctor, was always aware of her condition and its complications."

At 44, Dr. Pico had served as a physician in both Brazil and Venezuela and had also worked at the Camilo Torres Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba's historic center. Many will remember her as an exemplary daughter, sister, granddaughter, friend, and mother to a teenage daughter. "Our condolences to her mother Josefina Carela, family members, and friends," Arias added.

The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 am.
