A human fetus was discovered lying in the street this Wednesday in the Ateneo neighborhood, within the Vista Hermosa district of Santiago de Cuba. Local reporter Yosmany Mayeta shared on Facebook that the grim discovery took place on Calle L, between 11th and 6th streets, shocking the residents of the area.

A neighbor reported the incident through social media, detailing that the fetus had been in the street for some time before anyone realized its nature. "It had been lying in the street for a while, but people hadn't realized it was a baby. It wasn't until now that they noticed, and two police officers arrived on a motorcycle," the witness recounted.

As of now, the identity of the mother remains unknown. Authorities are working to gather more information about the case, according to the report.

Unwanted pregnancies have surged due to the lack of contraceptives and increased difficulties in obtaining abortions due to resource shortages, all within the context of a growing economic and moral crisis. Simultaneously, there has been a rise in cases of newborns being abandoned in garbage dumps across the island, most of which have been found deceased.

Amidst Cuba's crisis, several newborns have been abandoned in the streets, either dead or alive. Last year, a deceased baby was found in a trash can in the heart of Pinar del Río. Others have been found in similar conditions in Old Havana and Las Tunas. Recently, the body of another baby was found floating in Havana Bay.
